W.UOT.UII {IAHDHXf.NCI CIRCLE A meeting of the AVaiotahi Garclen•ing Circle was held at Airs. L. V. Looney’s residence oil April 19tli. Arrangements were made for a. flower show in the ‘spring. Identifying leaves of garden plants and shrubs, provided a very interesting competition. The .shrubs and flowers in the very pretty garden were much admired. and Airs. Looney gave cuttings of choice roses to members. A dielicious afternoon tea was served by Alesdames Jeffery and Snell and a very pleasant afternoon spent by members; OTARA MONTHLY MEETINC The Clara Women’s Institute held their Ai'av meeting last night in the lmll, presided over by Airs. AY. Gault. Unfortunately the attendance was small owing to the influenza epidemic. Several apologies for absence were received and the usual business was dealt- with. Alesdames Gault and A. Medallion will represent the Institute on the Centenary Celebrations Committee. The resignation of the sccititary was received with regret, Airs. C. Stewart being elected to fill the position. As Airs. Stewart was formerly a vice-president, this . office became vacant, Airs. Brown hc-ing olectedi to fill the position. •The report of the bi-annual council meeting was given. the president thanking Airs. Bingham for her comprehensive account. The 801 l Call was “Where do you keep your Programme?”, A talk by Air. Carter Bowles on South Africa was listened t.) with great interest and the hope expressed for a. further talk.

'two demonstrations were given, one by .All’s. Beattie on the making of very dainty shoulder sprays and one Ik Alls. Gault- on an eggless, bakeless cake. Hearty votes of thanks weie accorded to both these ladies and to Air. Bowles; also to Airs. G. Neilson and Aliss J. Young, who judged a. debate. The subject of the debate was. “First- Impressions Count”. The winning side—the negative—was taken by Airs. Gault and Aliss Lois Gordon, the positive side being in the hands of Airs. A. AlcCal--1 ion and Airs. Brown.

The competition results were : —3 canots. Airs. A. AlcC'allion 1. Eggless sultana loaf: Aliss K. Harrison 1, Airs. Medley 2. Hostesses for the evening were Alesdames Hedley and Jones. The singing of the National Anthem concluded the meeting.
