WOMAN DETECTIVE
EARNS £BOO A YEAR PREFERS JOB TO MARRIAGE LONDON, March 6.—Woman Detective Sergeant- Mary Shan ley, of New York police, who arrived, in London yesterdlay, would., rather trail crooks with a gun than lie married. In ‘ her handbag were ;a -loaded revolver and a pair of handcuffs. Shei earns £BOO a year, thinks she has the best job in the world and says she. would not give it up for marriage or anything .else. Miss Mary Shanley is “in town” with Detective J. Sullivan and Detecth’e James Reddin to take back to New York Solomon Stein and his wife Rose, whose extradition to America to face charges of robbery with violence was ordered by the Bow Street magistrate. Uses Gun, Too. She said! to a reporter.: “Of course I’ve got a gun. And I can hit at 25yds. with it. Sure, I’ve pulled it on many occasions. “There are five other women detectives with me in New York and we all have to carry guns. We arrest gangsters, too.” Mliss Shanley is aged 35, sft. GJin. tall, broad-shouldered, and weighs list. Gib. has a merry twinkle in her eyes, and does not look a bit tough. She has red-varnished finger nails, likes a little lipstick, and wears a lot of jewellery. “Last June,” she said, “I trailed two pickpockets to a railway station. They tried! to get away,' so 1 fired in the air. That was enough. One of them had 4JT previous convictions, the •tlier '39.”
