ANNUAL MEETING HELD AT ' WHAKATANEi , ■ - V * r .v . ; The animal meeting of the Day of Plenty District, Pig, Council took place at Wliakatane on Friday last, when an attendance in' the'-vicinity of 100 delegates andfvnieitfjiers of pig clubs ; formed in the district was present. Mr: D. S'. Ross - (Te Puke), occupied the chair. The chairman's report and balance-sheet were favourably, received. Remits submitted by clubs were discussed at sfonie length. Following ;remits from -Several clubs expressing the desire.to have more active club representation on the District Council, it was decided to forward a remit to be submitted to the N.Z. National Pig. Council, for approval. • , According to the rules of The District Council three members retire by ballot annually but are eligible for reelection. Messrs. R. Strugnell (Tauranga)/;jjT. Jamieson (Rangitaikfjj and H.Chrisp (Gisborne) retired this year. Thu latter is now chairman of the recently-formed East Coast-Pover-ty Bay District- Council and was ineligible for re-election. Those nominated for .tluv vacant seats were Messrs Strugnell, Jamieson, Dunning (Rangitaiki), and 'l)arsoils (Rotorua). A ballot was taken, club delegates and council foundation members only vot-
ing. Messrs. Strugnell,' Dunning am. Persons were elected. Rotorua —where tn clubs are in operation—thus representation on the Council right from the inception of the movement. This will occasion no small amount oi satisfaction to the clubs in the Rotorua area, Mr. Parsons being an enthusiastic supporter-of the ~ pig ‘. club movement and being a member of several clubs there. Mr. .Duniiing/is a member of the- Omehu Club, Fidgecumbe, and was the unanimous selection ol club delegates in the Rangitaiki area.Mr. Strugnell is one of the original members of the District Council and is ’ a • member of the Omokoroa, and one or two other clubs. the Taiiranga district. Mr. D. S. RpsS was reelected president. M. Pierson, Advisory Officer in Swine . Husbandry also took part in the discussions arising, congratulating and commend! gg those present for their continued interest in the Bay Club movement. Messrs.' O. Bavis (Kutarere), B. S. THE PIC INDUSTRY FIELD DAY AT FACTORY FARM A successful field day was held on Thursday last on the Opotiki Dairy Company’s pig farm, a large number
of farmers...and others interested in the pig industry being present. After a few- • remarks' by the farm manager (Str. D; Beattie), Mr. J. Been berg, Supervisor for the Bay of Plenty Pig Council, gave a very. interesting and instructive address on the desired type of pig required to produce a good bacon pig.
The high light of the afternoon was a baconer judging competition for which prizes in the form of pig meals were donated by] Messrs. W. and It.' Fletcher- L.td. * and the X.Z. Co-op. Pig Marketing Assn. Messrs. It. Axtens (Nuliuhou), N. A. Macdonald (Waimana)’, and <T. Litt placed the five baconers correctly. On tbe drawing of lots Messrs. Macdonald and Litt annexed the prizes. The adjudicators were Mtesfsrs. J. lteenberg and J) Beattie. Five baconers were yarded for the competition, and the competitors were required to place them in order of merit in judging on the hoof. The judges, following the competition, gave their reasons for their decisions in placing the pigs. Owing to the unevenness in type, weight and breed, the competitors’ task was by no means a simple one. The farm manager gave a- short demonstrations on the value of and the methods**ad<jpted in using the dip recently installed on, the farm lor dipping pig.si- He’also explained at-some length tint -simplicity and easy manner in which t© ring pigs, and also how to de-tusk boar pigs; an up-to-date bail being fitted up) for the pur-pose-'the bail being of a type hot usually seen, even on commercial piggeries : nevertheless of value on a dairy farm,/ where pigs are considered a valuable' adjunct l to dairying activities. As the result /of the demonstration, M .es.srs.i- Mottram (Nukuhou), A. J. McCall ion and A. Vanstone, local farmers, have placed orders lor the installation of the same type of hail. The 'proper ’ procedure to adopt in ringing mature pigs was 1 also fully explained by Mr.. Beattie, the farmers presl?pt^nijcpr.essiugtheir appreciation of the value of the field day to them. Messrs. H. M. Peirson and G. Kent, officers of the Department of Agriculture, were also present. A vote of thank.s to the dairy company and to Messrs. Reenherg, Beattie, PeirsQi: and!
