WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
WAIMANA-NUKUHOU MEETING There was quite a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Waimana-Nukuhou branch of the Women’s Institute held in the Waimana Hall last Wednesday afternoon. The meeting Avas presided over by Mrs. H. Marra. FolloAving the Institute song, the usual , business was transacted.
It was decided to join the Pan-Paci-fic Women’s Association.
Mjrs, Marra and Mrs. Ring were appointed, delegates to- attend the annual Federation meeting, Avliich is being held in Whakatane on April 27th. The competition for that day Avill bo a “Sultana Cake” and a “Boavl of Berries”.
Mrs. K. Bell gaA'e an interesting reading on several famous ay omen, which AA*as much appreciated. Mrs. E 3. P. Woolfield spoke on tho Arts and Crafts, and Thrift Articles for the centenary, and asked the members to make an effort to Avork something for the exhibition. A talent competition had been held during the past year, and the members, aa'lio took part, deserve every credit for the Avay they Avorked, the Institute benefiting by £7. . Faeh member making five shillings and over received a. gift. The; potato competition was Avon by Mrs. F. Savage; and Mrs. Woolfield donated a very nice jn-ize. ; The winners for the points prizes for the competitions during the past year were: Mrs. liewitt 1, Mrs. T. Wardlaw 2, Mrs. I. Savage 3. The. first prize Avas donated by Mrs. F. Savage. The most points for the best flower, Avas also Avon by Mrs. Hewitt.
During the- afternoon, Mrs. Woolfield welcomed’thp new president, Mrs. Marra; and assured her of the co-oper-ation of the members during the year. Mrs. Woolfield also presented the president Avith a bouquet; and bouquets and gifts were also presented to Mrs. F. Savage, the retiring president, and Mrs. C. Wylde, secretary and treasurer, in appreciation of the work done during their term of office. The May meeting will be members’ day and Mts. I. Savage will be in the chair.
Mrs. Fi Davies gave vocal items which were much appreciated. The Roll Call was “Suggestions for Future Programmes”. . The day’s competitions -were well entered for, the results being:— Jar of raspberry and plum jam: Mrs. Bishop Wardlaw 1, Mrs. Davies 2, Mrs. C. Wylde 3. Brown scones: Mrs. Burnett 1 and 2, Mrs. Mitchell 3. Best flower: Mrs. F. Bell (dahlia.) 1, Mrs. Fleming (dahlia) 2, and Mrs. I. Savage (African marigold) 3. . A dainty tea was served: by the hostesses, Mrs. King, Mrs. Mclvor, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Luttrell,. and Miss B. Luttrell. The ai'ternqon concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
