OPOTIKI CAM PA ICN OPENS PROCESSION BY CHILDREN DISPLAY AT RESERVE

Opotiki’s “Physical -Fitness Week was officially opened to-day at the Reserve Avheri a. large gathering was present. A procession of scliool children, from tile school to the reserve created eonsidereable interest- and their mass display at the reserve is particularly Avort-liy *of comment. The Avoid “FIT”’ Avas formed by the children in precise movements and an exhibition of drilling and folk dancing was then given. Then followed) a programme of races and events organised by the Athletic Club.

Mr. F. J. Short, as chairman of the committee extended a hearty Aveleome to all present and expressed the thanks of the fecal executive to 31 r. A. G. Hultquist 31. P. for attending and performing the opening ceremony. Thanks Aveie also extended to all avlio had assisted in the carrying out of the arrangements for the Aveek and special thanks Avere given to the clergy who had opened the week on Sunday with special sermons and thus attended to the spiritual side of the campaign. In his concluding remarks, 31 r. Short gave a slogan to all present, especially to the children: “Eat Right, Drink Right, Work Right, Play Rigid, Sleep Right, Think Right”.

3lr. -V. G. Hultquist 3J.P. first congratulated the children on their display and then .spoke of the pleasure it gaA’e him to be present. The aims and objects of the Government- in organising this Physical Fitness Week Avere explained by 3lr. Hultquist. Jt had been realised that Avith improved machinery *pecple Avere given much more leisure and it- was considered a duty to make extra provision for the physical development of the people. This was a time when people must look to their physical and mental welfare. Mr. Hultquist congratulated the committee on such a fine opening and expressed . the wish that other functions arranged for the Aveek would be equally successful. in his concluding remarks Mr. Hultquist assured l all present of: his willingness to help at all times in securing improved facilities Avhieh Avould aid tiie physical development of both young and old.
