“A YANK AT OXFORD’’ America’s distinguished young star —Robert Taylor—as “A Yank at Oxford,” will be seen at the- Do Luxe Theatre on Saturday and Monday". Tin's, is the first British-made film from M'etro'-Goldwyn-Mayer. Taylor went to England to make it, and with him were Lionel Barrymore, veteran star of the theatre and the screen, and Maureen O’Sullivan, the lovely Irish colleen of Hollywood. Jack) Conway was there to direct the picture’ and assembled a. brilliant cast of supporting British stars—Vivien Leigh, Edmund Gwesnn, Griffith Jones, and others.
“A Yank at Oxford” presents' Bob Taylor in his most characteristic/ role —a- star athlete from a small midwestern American college—a freshwater college, if you please—who wins a; scholarship to Oxford and there meets' the girl of all girls. By r filming the picture on the actual scene, M-G-M has given us the first authentic screen insight into life at Oxford. Wei see the world-famous Oxford-Cambridge track meet and the boat races on the Thames—the peculiar hazing rituals of the upper classmen—and we Avatch Robert Taylor develop from an inexperienced (Yankee lad to an athletic hero. It is Taylor’s best role, according -;o all the- preview cities. London saw the picture first, of course, and raved about it.
When you watch “A Yank at Oxford” on the screen at the Dc Luxe Theatre, you will be observing the newest experiment of Hollywood, on an international scale. M-G-M established its own studios, equipped them Avitti the latest modern devices and sent its leading stars across the Atlantic to play the leading roles. Nothing of the sort had ever been attempted previously. . Remember, two days only. Saturday and -Monday at the De Luxe Theatre—“A Yank at Oxford,” starring Robert Taylor. Avitli Lionel Barrymore, Maureen O’Sullivan, Vivien Leigh, Edmund Gwcnn and Griffith Janes.
“HEADIN’ EAST” Buck Jones, king of cowboy stars, deserts the A'ast stretches of cowcountry and invades thei close confines of New York, to put a stop to the depredations of racketeers and gangsters, in “Headin’ East,” liis neAvest- Columbia action-drama coming Saturday to- the De Luxe Theatre. Ruth Coleman, titian-haired beauty, makes her debut as Buck’s leading lady in the new picture. Don Douglas, noted Broadway stage star, heads the strong supporting cast, Avliich features Shemp Howard, Earl Hodgins, Elaine Arden and Frank Faylen. “OVER SHE GOES” .. Rollicking, farcical comedy" Avitli merry music, tightly packed Avitli bright breezy" situations and delightful dancing—that’s “Over She- Goes.” the sparkling screen version of the record-breaking West End stage success, which comes t-oi the De Luxe Theatre next Tuesday and Wednesday. With laughter leader Stanley Lupino heading the original London stage cast, this merry musical comedy may rightly be termed, “the happiness picture of 1938.” “Over She Goes” tells of the adventures of Tommy, Billy and Harry, throe ex-members of a vaudeville act,' when Harry becomes a- peer on the presumed death of his uncle, Lord Drewsdon, and is pursued by a titlehunting' ex-flame: To outAvit the damsel the ingenious Tommy (played by Stanley Lupiuo, of course) poses as Harry’s uncle, mysteriously returned l from the jungle in Avliich he is supposed to have died, hoping to make the gold-digger believe that there is no title or inheritance to share. You can imagine the tun in this laughter-ladon situation.
One of the many interesting; features of tho film is the easting of Max Baer, the famous American boxer, as a tough “he-man” from the wide open spaces, who is Stanley Lu pi no’s rival for the affections of vivacious Gina Malo. “ALaxie” is in iris clement in this pai’t and has some screamingly funny scenes with Stanley Lupino and Laddie Cliff.
Four lovely leading ladies support Stanley Lupino in the production, Claire Luce, glamorous as ever in the romantic lead as Harry’s fiancee, Gina Malo, as Stanley Lupino’s bright young girl friend, Sally Gray, as Billy’s, and! Judy Kelly as the beautiful cause of all the trouble. 1
