PUBLIC WORKS HOLIDAY FARAIKRS’ UNION PLAN With a. view t 0 providing adecpiate labour for seasonal work and overcoming the problem of the present season, when men have been attracted to public works, a suggestion was made at a. meeting of the Poverty Bay provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union last week that the public works should be closed down for about six weeks during the period when the demand way greatest for seasonal work.
MV. C. Tietjen, who made the suggestion, said that much of the present trouble of securing men for farm work would be obviated. A voice ; Look at the money the Government would save. Air. Benson: If the Public AA orks Department took that stand, and closed down public works for a period, the men would be looking tor jobs. Mr. H. B. Bull: If things go on as they are now. we will soon have plenty of labour. Air. AY. Honey: Yes, the men will be looking for work,. No action was taken in regard to the proposal.
