WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MEETING AT WOODLANDS The December meeting of the Woodlands Women’s institute was held on Tuesday at the residence of airs. McGregor whose lovely garden was greatly admired. Regret at the absence of Mrs, jVohle through illness was expressed together with best wishes for her speedy recove tv. A small amount of business was dealt with and helpful information on institute affairs was given by members who find attended the recently held institute School. ' Christmas greetings were received from Otara Women’s Institute and a caul, from Mr. A. G. Hultquist ALP. and Mrs. Hultquist. A programme cf amusing games and competitions was enjoyed, the winners being MYs. Sargent ami Mrs. Price. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostess assisted by Miss Jean McGregor, and a vote of thanks to thejn concluded a delightful afternoon. MEETING IN OPOTIKI

Quite a large gathering attended the December meeting nl the Women’s Institute and spent a very enjoyable evening. .Mrs. Fisher presided and on opening the meeting read the freed, and all members joined heartily in singing the Institute Song. Several members entered lor the competition, which was a dress to cost not more than ss. A dress parade was licicj, the winner of the competition being Mrs. Dain, and Miss P. Thompson secured second place. Much interest was displayed in this and some of the frocks resembled Paris models, but not. quite so costly. A roll call “A Cure loir the Blues’’ was responded to by all members. |)r. Brass kindly gave a talk, choosing as his subject “Samoa”. This was very interesting, and bis allotted time passed very quickly. By special request an appropriate recitation! for the lestive season was contributed by Mrs. Short. A Hisses F. Murray and Morgan also bad the Christmas feeling when they chose their delightful solos, the former singing “The Three .Mummers’ and the latter “Silent Night”. Miss .Morgan also sang a seng in Maori which was a special treat.

The competition tor the three best gladioli and delphiniums was won by .Mrs. Fisher and the carnation competition was won by Mrs. Jeltery. .Mesdatnes Mansell. Fvershod, Thompson .and Mls.s White acted as hostesses and supplied a dainty supper. A .jolly meeting closedl with the singing of the National Anthem. W AIMANA-NU KUHOU MEETINC A very pleasant afternoon was .spent at the monthly meeting ol the Waimana-N ukuhnu Women’s Institute last Wednesday, the occasion being “0 raudmot ber’s Day”. Mrs. F. Savage presided over a good attendance of members. The usual routine business was transacted, and donations were received Irom members and others lon- the Ambulance fund. It was decided to have the annual Institute picnic, on the first. I hursday in January, at Mr. Wooltield’s farm. Mrs. Savage then retired from the

chair, and Mrs. 11. Wardlaw conducted the rest of the meeting. Mrs. Wardlaw called on all grandmas to come forward. Mrs. Wonlfiehl, president ol the Federation, presented each "grandma with a hoa.utiful Tanupiet. of Hewers from all members. There were thirteen grandmas present. Mrs. A. I*. Wyldo, w.lto is ill. and Mrs. \\ . Wardlaw were absent, but gifts of flowers and books were forwarded to them. Books were also given to Mrs. F. 8011, Mrs. Hughes and Mirs. Fugle. for having most grandchildren. A novel competition for the grandmas was won by. Mrs. Hewitt. Delightful vocal items .were given by Miss Hoole who sang “Little Old ■Lady”, and “To a Miniature”, and Mrs. Davies sting “Silver ’threads Among the Cold”, very sweetly. Little Lois Wardlaw gave a recitation, entitled “Cranny”, which was most appropriate. Monica Boynton, in her usual sweet voice, sang “Little Old Lady”, and “September in the Bain”. Songs and choruses and folk dances were given by the pupils ol the Wainiaua school, their items being much appreciated. 'Flu*, Institute Glee Club then sang C hrist mas carols. The competitions lor the day were well patronised, the results being as follows:

Christmas Novelty, costing not more than I/O: .Mrs. 'l'. Wardian I (with a spray of wood fibre flowers). Airs. 11. Ward law ‘2, Airs. K. Hell ij. Jar of Preserved (loosehei ries : Airs. Hewitt I, All's. I'\ Hell *2, Airs. Woolfield H. Host’ Iflower: Airs. Hughes (cactus) 1, All's. Jerram (dahlia) 2, Airs. .Mitchell I). The -hostesses. Mrs. K. Hell, All's. J. Hoynton, Mrs. H. Hell. ATis. Davies, and Airs. Cranswick, served a delightful afternoon tea, and the schoolchildren also enjoyed soft drinks and biscuits. At the conclusion of the day Airs. Savage wished all a merry Christinas, and a hearty vote of thanks was given to the judges for the afternoon. Airs, (jlrant and Airs. Huff, and also to Air. Hell for tin* children’s items. Mrs. Hewitt on behalf of the grandmas, thanked all for the pleasant afternoon given. , The National Anthem closed the meeting.
