COUNTY WORKS

THE ENGINEER’S REPORT ! ) The county engineer, Air. \V. AV. Upton, reported: as follows at the monthly meeting of the Opotiki County Council:—

Contract Completed —Contract No. 572 for reforming and gravelling 44 chains of Irvine’s Hoad has been completed. Access to Ruff’s,. Hiwarau. — I have" taken Air. .iWrkmyer over the ground and shown him the line that the Council may have surveyed. The estimated cost of the survey and preparations of plan is about £3O.

Access to Butey’s. —l havei inspected the proposed route to give access to the above. The distance from the end of the legal road through Hoove's and Humfreyi’s to the nearest portion of Batey’s land is 1 mile HO chains; Of this some 04 chains through -Mr. Hecve’s property has been formed. The probable cost is as follows: Compensation to Air. lteeve for land and road £175, and the cost of forming the balance £B9O, at total of £lO7l. Wainui Read. — l have laid off work on this road, prepared the plans and taken out the quantities. 1 find that the work will probably cost considerably more tlmn what L expected and my estimate was evidently too low. 'The cost would new be about £795 for raising the road on an average of feet, forming 10 feet in width and metalling 40 chains. This 40 chains would bo from, starting at the far end

of the Hat and ending about'2* chains Opotiki side of the junction with Harrison’s road. This length is apparently the worst piece although tor a further 20 chains this way and opposite the old Cheddar Factory,it is covered at times hy the high tide. Works Carried Out. —The contractors have practically’ finished their work of gravelling one mile 70 chains Copenhagen Road. The small bridge on the Takuputaha Road: near Hermauson’s has been reconstructed and lengthened. The far end of, the Pnerata Romd near Alessrs. Candy and .Shalloon’s has been trimmed up. On Gabriel’s Gully road side drains have been cleaned out and a portion of the road remetalled. A temporary bridge has been erected to carry traffic whilst the AYaiotalii Valley Bridge is being rebuilt. On A errnll s Road several narrow pieces have been widened and points out oil.

Gravelling repairs have been done on the Paerata, AAbirrington. AAaioeka Pa and \Yaiawa roads.

The grader and planer have worked on the Omsirumutu, Waiawst. Woodlands, Hospital and Wsiiawa roads. Specifications Approved—Specifications have, been approved by the District Engineer for the expenditure of grants on .Keen’s and Pile’s roads. 'Tenders \yill he invited for the works when the monetary authority is received. Access to Section 493 (Shalfoon’s) — A portion of this road has sheared awav on the outside leaving the road at that place somewhat narrow. Arrangement was made hy the Council some time ago loir the maintenance at a fixed rate per annum hut I consider this damage extraordinary and would recommend the restoration at this part of the road t<» be done*, by the 1 coluncil. Tim general maintenance has not been as good as it might have been
