AMATEUR ATHLETICS

FRIDAY NIGHT’S MEETING MANY GOOD FIELDS There was a fair attendance at the night meeting hold on Friday night on the reserve by the Opotiki Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. .Ln most of the events there was very keen competition, and the arrival of a number of first-class athletes from Waimana added to the interest of the meeting and made for very strong competition in the senior men s events. From ,a spectator’s point of view a number of the running events were spoilt owing to the large number of other competitors being on the field, while in two or three events noncompetitors ran along with competitors during the running of the events. It would he a. big improvement were noii-eompetitors kept right to the side of the cycle track during the running of events as in previous years. Some of the cyclists also created a danger by riding at top speed past the grandstand during practice. With children occasionally running oil. to the track a serious accident could easily result. It appears to he quite unnecessary for cyclists to indulge in practice during the running of a meeting and any trial runs necessary could lie indulged in on the part ol the track not iieing continually crossed by runners. 'The provision of a. loudspeaker system is appreciated by the spectators but.on Friday night the volume of the music was far too loud and jarring and could be toned down with advantage.

The indications arc that the (. Ink should enjoy a very successful season. Good performances are already being recorded and competition in the senior and junior events, promises to he particularly keen this year. Some of the younger competitors are producing good times and the club should he able to field a fairly strong team in the annual inter-club meeting.

The various events resulted as follows : B Grade Boys, 50 Yards.—lst. heat: Braae 1. Rain and Skinner (tie) 2. 2nd- heat: Reeves 1, Button 2, Young M. Final: Beeves 1, Skinner 2, Braae M. It was noticed that a number <»i competitors in the above events made the mistake of slowing up just before reaching the tape and a little advice kv the Martel's should correct this tendency.
