GOTHAB I > ZFBIC'H, Sept. 20.—-Broposals are being pressed in Switzerland for the ennstruetion ol a new railway line to replace the St. Gothard tunnel which runs from CJoosehenen to Airolo, 5.).', miles. The line would run at a lower level tT-rm ErstfeUl t«r Biasea, through tiie Beuss and Levantina valleys. It would he 25 miies long. Apart from strategic considerations, it is claimed that tin- route would elleel considerable economy in operating costs, and bring the Ticino Canton much nearer the rest ol the country. Bellm/.oma, for instance, could lie reached in two hours from Zurich. ’I lie cost is estimated at about £7,<<00,000. 'l’lie present St. Gothard route, it is suggested, would he maintained as a local railway and the tunnel used as a means ol swift transport lor inotoi ears, available all the year round.
