The lirst big-scale open-air tests were made over the marshes on foulness Island, loneliest part ol the Kssex coast. The generators were placed along (30(30 yards ol the seawall and set in operation. They made a cloud of light grey smoke several miles square. Jt was picked up by a .south-east wind which carried it over Hssex mainland. It.A.lf. reconnaissance planes, acting as enemy bombers, .flew at oOUO. S()(XJ and 10,000 feet from the ground and tried to spot certain well-known U udinarks.
