IVIF FI C l'L'i'l ES OVER, NAT LV E RATES .DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL The difficulties concerning the collection of Native rates were discussed at the County Council meeting to-day when a letter was received irom the. N.Z. Comities’ Association enquiring about the total native rates which should have been paid. Air- Merry said that the existing state was not satisfactory as the Natives got the benefit ef a -hospital rate to which they did not subscribe. Air. Alerrv then gave the following figures concerning Native rates: Year Rates struck Rates Coll’d. 1933- £133 £l3 1934- £IBO £l9 1955-39 £l7l £l6 Cr. AlvDunnell said that when the Social Security Scheme came into op- ( ration, the hospital would be filled with .Maoris. Cr. Alaxwell said that the Council should work t« have hospital rates taken from the Consolidated .Fund. Alrv Gault thought- that the Consolidated Fund should carry the burden oif the Alaoris. ft was not fair that white people in -a county like this should have to carry the burden of the Natives. It was left to Air. Alerrv to reply to th.e letter supplying details.
