Two linndreci and fifty pigs of all classes, will, be ottered. Cricket Season. Although., a ■ meeting of k cricket players was held last night it was not possible to do very much business because of the absence of representatives of two clubs. A meeting will be called at a. later date when it is hoped that there will he a good attendance. Obituary. / The death occurred on Wednesday night of a well-known resident of Hikiitain, Opotiki, in the person of Mr ti. K. VazCy. Deceased, who leaves three soils and two daughters, was predeacesed by • his wife some years ago. The fuuercl left St. Stephen’s Church at 3 o’clock this afternoon for the Opotiki Cemetery. New Footpath in St. John Street. At the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Borough Domicil, held on Tuesday night, it was stated that the Cornic'd had decided to put down a concrete footpath from the Drill Hall corner to Richard Street, the path to be placed alongside the fence recently erected along the* drain to the corner of Diehard and' St. John streets. After deciding to continue the path from St. John Street along Richard Street to Church Street, the Council also decided to lay this path in concrete. Flowering Trees. Quite a number of the young trees planted only a short time ago in the St. John Street avenue are now commencing to flower, although many of the trees arc little morn than a foot or two in height. Flowering shrubs and trees throughout the district, are reported to be bearing a. particularly heavy crop of blossom and present a very attractive appearance. Clean-up Week. " The matter of a clean-up week in the borotign was again brought up at Tuesday night’s meetfng of,‘the Opotiki Borough Council' and the health inspector, Mr M. J. Fogarty, who was in attendance, offered to co-operate with ’the council. The council decided to leave the matter in the hands of Mr Fogarty and the town clerk. Candidate Withdraws. Mr W. I). Lysnar, the .Independent candidate lor the Gisborne seat, lias notified his intention of withdrawing from the election campaign. This action means ..that there will now lie a straight-out contest between 31 r Jones, the National candidate and 31 r Coleman, 31. R.. the Labour candidate. Meteor Seen from Opotiki. The enormous meteor which was seen in Auckland to flash across the eastern sky at about midnight on Tuesday was also scon from Opotiki. The meteor as seen from Opotiki was in the north-eastern sky and was so brilliant that the 1 country was lit up as if by lightning. The bright light only lasted for a short time and ended with a great hurst of sparks as the meteor exploded. There was no sound of an explosion such as followed the fall of the- great' meteor near Toko.niaru, Bay many years ago and winch was heard distinctly, in Opotiki and districts even further away. Inquest Concluded. - The inquest into the death of John Klliott Hanna, aged 41, who died in the Cock Hospital on September 19, was concluded before the coroner, Air K. L. Walton, 5.31., at Gisborne on Wednesday. F.vidonce was given that deceased' was struck twice on the head in accidents while at work some weeks previously. 'Medical evidence was of the opinion that there was no connection between the previous accidents'and the fatal hemorrhage. The deceased had had a, very large haemorrhage, and that had occurred only a few' hours before liis death. There was nothing very definite in the post mortem to show why lie had had thehemorrhage. The verdict was in accordance with the medical evidence.

The sales, of butter by the Opotiki Dairy Association last season totalled £“379,365. 8s Id, export sales realising £245,243 10s od and. local sales &134,121 17s Bd. Due to the greater production by the company the 1 cost of manufacture per lb. bntterfat was lower than the prveious season, the figures being: 1936-37 season 1.828 d, 1937-38 1.725 d. Boxing Tournament. The Opotiki Boxing Association’s tournament which was unavoidably postponed some time ago will take place on Wednesday night next and an .exceptionally good programme of first-class bouts lias ■ been arranged. The main bout of the evening is,that between Brian McKay (Auckland) and Fred. Finnigan (Wellington)', two top-flight professionals. Broke a Rib While Coughing. Curious accidents occur from day to day in all parts of the world. One of the most curious, and perhaps as rare iis any. occurred recently in A\ oliiugton, when a man, in coughing, broke a rib. He had been suffering from influenza, which- left him with a hacking cough. It was during one of these violent spells of coughing that a rib was broken. His medical adviser said that lie had- never heard of such an occurrence before.
Cow’s Long Swim. An extraordinary incident is recorded from Somes Island, Wellington. A white cow, one of a mob being trucked at Petone, jumped from the wharf and swam to Leper Island, the small islet to the north. A telephone message was received by the officer in charge of the stock station on Somes Island and, as the result of a search, the animal was discovered. An effort was made to entice it to swim to the island, but this failed and it was decided that the only solution- was to kill it-, as there is no forage or water on the isiet. " Two men went- over from Fort Dorset and, after two shots missed, the stock manager succeeded in the dispatch of the cow. which was skinned and the carcase thrown into the sea. The distance .swum by the cow was over two miles.
