INSPECTOR'S EXPLANATION BOROUGH CLEAN-UP AVEIEK At the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council, the health department's inspector,. Air M. J. Fogarty, waited on tile council by special request- t<> ileal with complaints »y a borough resident of a drainage nuisance. MV Fogarty saitl the occupants had complained about the drainage and considered they knew more about the drainage than lie did hmisell. Air Fogarty explained the negotiations which had Liken place between the occupier and the owner of the property with hi nisei t and contended it was impossible to put- down a 5 It. deep sump oil the property as the water was too close to the surface. He would say it would be absurd to try and put- in such a sump hole. At the present time the house was fitted up with tin* best of fittings and drainage. He would like the. works committee to visit the section when be could explain the position more satisfactorily. lor " some time a big hedge had been obstructing the flow of water from the watercouse into which the house drainage flowed. He was certain that at the * present time there was no nuisance. There might be a smell later on in the dev weather but this would be from the drying up of the swamp. F-rom his own experience of sanitary affairs he could not recommend a sump on the property- He had insisted on Mr McGrovy cutting the hedge but only £| had been expended on the work and very little of the hedge bad been cut-. There would be a clear run of water it the hedge were removed and the dram straightened. 1 here was •i natural watercourse from the property and a surprising quantitv ■ of water was discharged by the drain. Councillor asked tfio inspector to exorcise his powers and see that the hedge was removed immediately as there had been trouble for the propertv in, question for some months. ' Air Fogarty thanked the council for listening to his explanation and said lie would do his best to have the drain .cleared at an early date.
