SINGING BY MAORI CHILDREN

RFC ORDIN G S ARR AN GED An interesting event in connection with Air Hultquist’s campaign occurred at Hiruharamama Native School on Alonday last, when Air It. T. Koiiore. Eastern Alaori Labour Candidate. met Air Hultquist, who was accompanied by his Coast organiser.. Air J. K. A- AA’hiting.

The Eastern Alaori Candidate, who like Air. Hultquist, commenced his campaign last week, had that morning been addressing the children of the native school on Alaori pronunciation, and when he heard that Mr Hultquist was due to arrive at the school he decided to wait aucl hear the children sing. It will be remembered that on the occasion ot the visit of the Hon. P. Eraser, Alinister of Education, to the Coast, both Air and Airs Eraser were greatly taken with the singing of the native children at this particular school, and -so enthusiastic was Airs Eraser that she promised to arrange to have the children s voices recorded for broadcasting and other purposes. All preliminary arrangements in this connection have now been made, and the children will shortly bo taken to Gisborne lor the recording to be carried out by experts, and ultimately the recordings will be sent to Australia for proper records to be made.

On the occasion of the visit on Monday of Mr B. T. ICohere and Mr and .Mrs Hnltquist to the school, Mr King, the headmaster, kindly arranged for the children to give a programme of items which was greatly enjoyed by the visitors, and a large number of local residents, and for which both Mr Kohere and Mr Hnltquist expressed their thanks, and congratulated the teacher and children on the high standard of their singing.
