FIRST LECTURE EVEN INC

SUCCESSFUL OPENING

A most successful lecture evening under tne auspices of the Opotuu aim. District Horticultural- Society was held m the Parish Jriall last niglic. The members each brought along a vase or bowl oi flowers and quite a comprehensive display was arranged, on the tables, tiie specimens in every instance being of excellent quant/ and effect. The exhibits were judged. py Mr. Geo. Lisle and points were' awarded to each competitor. The member with the most points at tne enu of the year will receive a handsome trophy. A special prize will be awar.ded at each monthly lecture and. the prize last night went to a beautifully arranged bowl of Iceland poppies ,exhibited by Mrs Beattie. All interesting talk on insect pests and sprays was given by Mr J. D. Claric and proved most educational. Mr Geo- Lisk gave a talk on raising of KusseTi lupins and afterwards distributed packets of seed to members on condition that they grew them in small boxes and took them along from time to tune to see liow the plants were progressing. Mr C. Reid also spoke 011 raising of gloxinias and was listened to with great attention. A discussion then took place among tlio large number of enthusiastic members on garden problems in general. The next monthly lecture will be held in the Parish Hall on October 11th. and' should prove an even more outstanding success than the first- evening and members are looking forward to another interesting and educational night.
