He is accompanied by Miss Olive Shalfoon. who will remain t in Auckland to take a position. ******* Miss Loina Vipond is spending a holiday in Auckland, with her parents. ******* Mrs J. Foy senr. ! and Miss Mildred Day left during the week-end for Auckland'. They will sail on 1 hursday per s.s- AA’anganella for Australia where they will spend an extended holiday. COMBINED WOODLANDS DANCE A POPULAR FUNCTION
Members of the Woodlands 1 bird Grade 'team combined with the organisers of the usual fortnightly dance held in Woodlands Hall on I‘riday night. The function was conducted by the young men who are to be congratulated oil the success of the evening. There was a very large attendance and a very happy time was spent. A popular programme of music was supplied bv Mr and -Mrs J. Maunix. with an extra by Mr N. Haudricks. The unties of- M.C. were ably carried out by Mr Stavely. Novelty dances were won by Mi ss K. Watson (Auckland) and Mr -V- Dando, Miss A. Lammas and Mr -V. Dando, Miss L. Baird and Mr S. Fisher. A Monte Carlo dance for the children caused considerable interest and resulted in Miss Betty Stavely and -Master Jimmy Alaunix winning the prize. Supper.was served bv- the young men. after which opportunity was taken to present various trophies to members of tin* football, team. Mr L. A. O. Davies, as the team’s coach, congratulated the team on the fine showing they had’ made towards the- end of the season- He mentioned that third grade loot-ball was a new venture jn Opotiki and although the maojrity of the players knew very little of the finer points of the game at the beginning of the season, he was very proud of the improvement they had shown and the promise they gavei for next season. He called upon the members of the W oedlands team to give three cheers for the City Third Grade Team. Mr Davies called upon Mr Barrett-, the. president of the City Club and president of the Bay of xdenty Rugby Union, to address .those present- Mi Barrett also congratulated the team on theijvr improvement thrbughout the year and wished them continued success. expressing the hope that the bovs would continue to> show the same interest as they bad during the pastseason. Mr Barrett led the members < i the City team in giving three rousing cheers for the Woodlands team. The trophies were then presented by Mir Davies to the rollowing players: — JC. Storer. for the most improved player. W. I’erfeot for the most improved back and the man who always wore a smile. I>. Stanbridgo for the most conscientious and attentive player. The. trophies were donated by Mrs Pilkington. Mr Pilkington . and Mr Davies. --'i!r Davies also spoke in high praise of Mr O. Shove, the manager of the team. Mr Shove had given up his time each Saturday to ho present at matches and had shown keen interest in. the progress of the. teamMi- L. Stnnhridge. on behalf of the team, and as a token of their appreciation, presented Mr Davies and Mr Shove with handsome filled cigarette containers complete with ash trays. ’ For himself and Mr Davies, Mr Shove thanked the members of the team for the handsome gifts, and remarked that any work he had done for the team had been a pleasure and he looked forward to their continued success next season. BASKETBALL DANCE .Members of the visiting Gisborne basketball team were entertained at a dance ,in the AA’oodlands Hall on Saturday night. The function was arranged by the members of the Old Girls’ Basketball team. There was a large attendance and a happy time was spent in dancing to music supplied by the Melody Alasters’ Orchestra. An oxfra was played by Air S. Shalfoon. The duties of AI.G. were capably bandied by Mr Dick Bennett and novelty dances were won by Aliss S. Scott and Air C. Tong, Aliss E. Debreeeny and Mr D. AYoolfield. Among those present were.—
