There " J a.s a large attendance at the Parish liail last night when the eighth birthday of the local branch ol Uie W.D.F.U. was celebrated. The hall was charmingly decorated with Spring lloweis. Mrs Martin, president, welcomed all present, there being a representative gathering ol members, members of the Farmers’ Union, members of sister organisations as the Women’s Institutes, members of the Opotiki Croquet- Club and many other friends both young and old. A very

happy evening was -spent in dancing, interspersed with musical items. r ! he programme of dances favoured the oldtime. although several modern .numbers were ill.so played. Mr and Mrs JAlannix provided excellent music, their ready response to encores being greatly appreciated by the dancers. Novelty dances were -won by All's,,! - Tabb and Air .11. Fisher, Miss: .1. Cochrane and Mr L. JoJdin,Aliss Jensen and Mr Knox and Miss L. Pennell and partner. The duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Air Stavel.v. Popular extras were played by Mr C. J. Fleming and MV Savage. A bright programme of musical items was presented. Airs J. Shaw contributed two vocal selections, and Aliss Hsmo Holiness v also sang two popular selections. Aliss K- Lambert gave two elocutionary items, and Aliss Betty Stavely and Aliss -Mavis Harrison contributed several very popular dance numbers. Both little girls were the recipients of charming floral posies presented by Aliss K. Lambert.

A delicious home-made supper was served, <1 uri ii}' which the table bearing the handsome birthday cake was carried in to the middle ot the ball. Ihe cake which was made by Mr,s Lowe and decorated liy Mrs Guthrie, was festooned with ribbons in the chosen colours of the Division—red. white, blue green and gold. Ihe ball lights ueie extinguished and the l eight candles on the cake were lit in the darkness. Mrs .■Martin extinguished .the lighted i candles ami called upon .M r .Mai tin. Mr Martin expressed the appreciation ol the members of the Farmers’ l nion in being asked to attend the I unction and extended their'congratulations to tin* division on this,’.their eighth birthday, expressing the hope that man.\ more birthdays would be celebrated with the same success. Other representative’s also expressed their appieciation of the happy evening they bud enjoyed and wished the Division continued success. Before the singing of Aulcl Lang (Syne which • concluded the evening, three cheers were called for the members of the W.D.F.U. and for Mr and Mrs Mannix who were largely responsible for the happy evening of dancing which was enjoyed.

DANCE AT WAIOEKA u No detail had been overlooked by the members of the Waioeka Hail Committee to ' ensure the success of their dance held in tlu? Waioeka Hall on A'omiay night. Although the attendance was not exceptionally large, owing to the many attractions offering during this month, -a- veiy happy time was spent by ad who attended. The Eleetiotouc Orchestra which was in attendance received repeated encores for the bright* and now numbers which they played. Alir J. AleDomild and Air Aloise supplied extras- Air J. Ban was the Ali.C. and several novelty dances were popular items of the programme. Streamers and confetti added gaiety to the scene while the distribution of amusing paper bats and toy squeakers provided great fun. A tasty slipper was enjoyed and dancing was continued until- the early hours. Dancers were very enthusiastic of the happy time they enjoyed, the many novelties ol the programme being greatly appreciated, and it is anticipated that future functions, conducted by this energetic committee will he exceedingly popular.
