Cattle on Move. \ A large mob of cattle left the Opotiki salevards early?,this morning.' Yth,is being the first mol} for some time.t As a. result- of the wet spelt, the ground.) along. Owing to the prevalence of minor complaints among the amateur boxers of the district, the . Waikoliu Boxing Association has been obliged to cancel its plans for an amateur tournament for to-night- . Gisborne’s Death-rate. There were fewer .deaths in Gisborne during August, compared with the number registered in the previous month, according to tlio vital statistics. Already 170 people have died in the past eight months, 64 more than for the same' period last year, and it is expected that the total for the year will be high.. In June there were 22 deaths, in July 37, and in August 25. Measles Epidemic. Tim measles epidemic still continues in the Opotiki district, and there has been a number of severe cases. Many of the patients have been adults, some of them being well into middle-age. Several children have contracted the disease twice. Marram Grass. The . marram grass which was sown in the sand-drifts along the Waiotahi beach road has taken well and the grass is now reported to he firmly established. The grass was planted in tufts with a few inches of the tops showing above the sand. Dumping of Rubbish. A complaint was received at the meeting of the Opotiki County Council to-day from Mr S. Gordon, that large amounts of rubbish had been dumped on his road- Or Hedley said that rubbish had been dumped over the Mill Stream bridge into the crock, the blocking of which was discussed at the previous meeting. It was decided to advertise, warning people against dumping rubbish in unauthorised places, and to take proceedings against any persons who offend in that respect. Cr Black humorously suggested that cats should ho included as rubbish also, as large numbers were dumped near his house. Zjiiliards Competition. The billiards competition between the Whakat-ane and Opotiki Fire Brigades was continued on Wednesday, night. Following were the results: — Billiards: Shaw and Miller (Opotiki) IOU heat Hurndell and Dent (Wliakatanc) 99- Hickey and Webb (Opotiki) 87 lost to Stewart and Norman (Whakatane) 100. Snooker: Shaw and Miller (Opotiki) 15 lost to Hurndell and Dent (.Whakatane) 25. Hickey and Webb (Opotiki) 26 lost- to Stewart and Norman (Whakatane) 50. Cup Presented. Lieut. Chilton of Matamatn, has presented a cup to be known as the Hugo Memorial Cup for competition amongst the Bay of Plenty Fire Brigades. Tin's cup will be competed toy at the Bay of Plenty Fire Brigades’ competitions to be hold at To Puke on Labour Day. It is understood that tho Matamata Fire Brigade will also be eligible to compete for the cup and the brigade will be present at the To Puke demonstration. Arrears in Rates. Mention of the large number of ratepayers who were in arrears in payment of rates, was made by Cr McDonnell at the County Council meeting to-day. He also mentioned that 120 ratepayers were unable' to vote at the last county elections on account of being behind with their rates- “It’s hard luck.” humorously remarked Cr Hedley, “when you have been canvassing for votes and discover that the ratepayers arc not entitled to one.”
