A meeting of those interested in the formation of a horticultural society in Opotiki was held in the Parish Hall last night. Mr J. I). Clark occupied the chair and in his opening remarks said that a good many people wore interested in .the suggested society and "thought it- would be a very good thing to have in Opotiki. There were already live district flower shows held each year and the district appeared to be fairly well catered for in that respect. There wore, also gardening circles but these appeared to be more or less social affairs. The object of a horticultural society was to deal with all -classes of gulden! ug including pruning, pest control, spraying, manuring, home beautifying and lectures were, also given. The chairman concluded his remarks by stating that a well-known authority had offered to prepare written lectures.
Mr Clark then called on Mr bisk to explain further matters in connection with horticultural societies.
Mr Lisle said he thought the Opotiki district would receive a horticultural society very well indeed. They would he able to work out gardening problems. He had assisted in. forming the Taka-puna Society three years ago and there were now 880 members and it had turned: out a- real success. The objective of a society was to provide a study of horticulture in all its branches. At Takapuna they had lectures once a month and every member brought along something of interest from the garden, especially anything unusual. These impromptu shows proved very popular indeed. Field days could be held and were very educational. Fruit pruning and. hybridizing were two of several subjects that could be taken. Tluf'beautifying of the town could also be dealt with. If he eould get- a suitable section for a rose garden, he believed he could get enough plants for lialf-an-aere. Gardening amongst the children could also be encouraged. Several of those present then spoke in favour of the formation of a horticultural society and it was resolved that a society; be formed, to be known as the Opotiki and District Horticultural Society.
