OPOTIKI BOROUGH COUNCIL

REBATE ON RATES

RUBBISH OX ROADWAY

A meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council was held on Friday night, when it was possible to transact only a limited amount of business owing to the late hour, after the round table conference of the County and Borough Councils.

On the motion of Or Johnson it was decided that the rates he confirmed. A brief discussion then took place on the question of granting a rebate for prompt payment of rates. On the motion of Cr Day, it was decided to offer a rebate of 2£ per cent for payment of rates within 30 days of due date.

Mr S. Gordon wrote re ragwort growing on the sandhills near the river mouth and also stated that dumping of rubbish was taking place on the sandhills road. Councillors considered that it was the place of the lessee to clear the ragwort from the sandhills. The town clerk said the sandhills road was controlled by the county council and the dump by the borough council. The trouble was that people were dumping the rubbish on the roadway.

It was decided to take the matter up with a view t 0 putting a stop to the practice. A letter was received in connection with the proposed visit of an architect in connection with the Centennial Exhibition. It was stated .that 3 Hr It. Huston. an Auckland architect who lias been closely associated with the plan for the Auckland provincial court would probably arrive in Opotiki on August ,23rd, and stay overnight. He. would he prepared to meet representatives of Opotiki local bodies on exhibition matters. The council decided that the Mayor and-Mr Briggs attend to any matters.
