Boxing. Owing to the Opotiki Boxing Association’s .arrangements" for a tournament on'Ttli. .September, the Amateur tournament in Te Puke has been postponed until Thursday, 15th. September. Leaning Coal-posts. One of the results of the heavy storms experienced recently in Opotiki was that the goal-posts at the eastern end of the reserve were nearly blown out of the grounds and are now leaning at a very acute angle. . Damage at Showgrounds. In addition to the blowing-over of the secretary’s office- at the showgrounds, a big pine tree was blown down .near the river and some of the trees near the ring were also blown over and limbs smashed. Two of the trees were biown over the fence surrounding the ling.

Willow Trees Showing Green. On account of the late autumn it was freely predicted by orcliardists that trees would lie much later in leafing and flowering l this spring than last year. However, willow trees in the Opotiki district are now showing a greenish tinge, the leafing of these trees being only a week later than the previous spring. Fruit trees are also reported to he blossoming as a result of the milder conditions now prevailing.

Opotiki-Cisborne* Mails. The manager of the Auckland-Gis-borne Transport Company. Mr I). Crooks, stated in Gisborne last week that the transport lorries were still keeping off the Opotiki-Gisborne main highway, at night as it had not yet recovered from the damage caused by the recent storm . The truck from Taneatua stays overnight at Qpotiki and leaves on the run to Gisborne each morning at daylight.

Cost of School Transport. When dealing with a request from a parent that an extension of the bus service he made to bring his children to the Te Puke School, the chairman Rev. J. C. McC'aw), stated the cost of transport to the school was £I4OO per annum. The Education .Department, where an extended service was not warranted, on account of heavy expense, expected children to walk up to two miles to the bus terminus before an extension could be considered. Parents should bear this in mind when making complaints. The committee endorsed the chairman's remarks.

Farmers’ Union Remit.

The following remit has'been forwarded by the Opotiki Branch of the N-.Z. Farmers’ I’niou to the provincial secretary of the Union at Auckland for consideration at the subprovincial meeting to be held at Te Puke: “That we consider it unfair and unjust that responsibility, should be placed on a car owner for damages in respect to as person whom he may offer a ride in his car, should an accident occur causing injury to such person; and that steps be taken to try and have this responsibility removed.”

Big Factory Payment. The payment of nearly £32,000 was made by the Kia Ora Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited (Gisborne), last week, the amount including the final payment for the past season, dividend on shares, the advance on July Imtterfat and other accounts. This amount exceeded the corresponding payments last year by. approximately £7OOO, despite the fact that the July Imtterfat payments arc lower. The past season’s final payment is being made on a basis of 2£d per lb,, butterfat. while on the previous season’s supply the final disbursement was at the rate of only L}d per lb., this making a difference of more than £GOCO. The July advance payment, totalled only £IOO4 at the rate of 14d per II)., compared with £2286 for July last year on a basis of 12jd. per lb., and is the lowest amount paid out for that month for many years because of the poor winter conditions.I—P.B. 1 —P.B.
