COAST RCAD BLOCKED

MANY SLIPS ON ROAD BIG RIVERS FLOODED The torrential rain which fell on the East Coast District during the past few days completely blocked the Opo-tiki-Te Kalia. main highway, and the Public Works Department was working at- full speed in an endeavour to open up the road to-day. Most of the slips occurred between Torero and Oxnaio, but the flooding of streams further on also made the road impassable. So heavy was the fall of rain that the road along the Hawai flat was flooded by about a foot of surface water. A truck was able to reach Opotiki this afternoon.

As usual the Raukokcre and Kereu rivers were in flood and could not lie forded.

Although the girders for the construction of the Kereu bridge have been on the river bank for some little time, work lias not yet been commenced. It is hoped that the recent representations of tlie Opotiki County Council to have this bridge pushed aheacl at an early date will hear fruit!
