NEW FACTORIES
RECORD FOR N.S.W. 12 MONTHS’ INCREASE SYDNEY, Aug. s.—The number of registered factories in New South Wales on December 31, 1937, was 13,703—u record—according to the annual report on the working of the Factories and Shops Act, which was presented to Parliament yesterday by the Minister for Labour and Industry, Mr Muir. During the year, the number of factories increased by 1573. The total number of persons employed in December was 19-1,271, an increase of 10,060 for the year. Commenting on the report last •night, Mr Mair said that the greatest, increase was in adult males. Male employment had increased by 0801, and female employment by 3259. Of the males, 5510, and of the females, 2712, were' more than 21 years of age, and, 1291. and 547 respectively, were under that age. Of the 194,271 persons employed in the faetori’es—which was the greatest number on record—i--1139.233, or 71.7 per cent., were males, and 55.035, or 25.3 i per <ent., were females.
