“TOO MfUCII HIGHWAYS” COUNT T ROAD CLAIMS’ Holding the view that the expenditure on highways was too great compared with that on county roads, the Cook County Council on Wednesday decided to urge on. the Government that all money collected from the petrol. tax should he used for both highways and county roads, states the P. B. Herald. This motion followed the reading of a circular from the Canterbury Progress League, which urged that ail petrol tax money should be used on highways. Cr M. T. lb Hall pointed 1 out that this year’s votes included £5,000,000 for main highways and only £1,500,000 for county roads, and the propor- __ lion of expenditure on highways was out of all proportion to the county road expenditure. Cr F. S. Bowen moved that, the y Canterbury resolution lie amended to provide that the whole, of the tax should lie-given to the Highways Board and county councils, and that none should be acquired by the consolidated fund. The county clerk, Mr F. T. Itobinsnii, pointed out that the Comities’ Association had been urging that tho subsidy on rates should be on all rates collected without the present limit of £2500.

Cr Bowen’s proposal was adopted
