One hundred and fifty head: of cattle will he offered. v '~ Institute Conference. “That we protest against the country being used as a dumping ground for undesirables”, was a Bay of Plenty remit adopted at the conference of Women’s Institutes held in Wellington. ' Cars Collide. A collision took place in Church Street this afternoon between two ears, one of which was pulling out after parking on the side of the street. The front bumper of this car was pulled off. It is a fairly common practice for motorists to move off in Church Street without giving ample warning of their intention. Mr Huitquist to Speak. An indication that the Budget debate is still far from its conclusion is given by Mr A. G. Huitquist, M.P. for the Bay of Plenty, who lias advised the Opotiki News that he expects to make his contribution to the debate on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Saturday’s Temperatures. Temperatures reported irom various parts of the -North Island at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning were: — Auckland 53 degrees, Tanranga and East Cape 47, Opotiki 48, Gisborne 45, Napier 43. and Wellington 42. Opotiki was the only place in the North Island reporting blue skies in the early morning. Men on Opotiki-Cisborne Road. The Gisborne register ol unemployed single men for road work in the country lias been exhausted, and recently a party of 25 came from Hastings to the Gisborne district. Some of the men are camped near aikoliu and others near Trafford’s Hill, and are engaged in widening and improving the highway. B*asketball Match Arrangements. At a meeting of the executive of the Gisborne Basketball Association, a letter was received from the Opotiki Basketball Association asking for a match with the Poverty Bay representative team, to lie played either in Gisborne or in Opotiki. It was decided to invite the Opotiki team to play in Gisborne oil the same date as the Dobson Cup match and it was suggested that the A\ airoa and Opotiki teams also have a match arranged tor them. The Marathon team were asked to assist in the billeting of the Opotiki players as they had been guests of the Opotiki team last season. Patrol’d Humorous Experience. , Those race patrons who took a chance on Friday and parked their cars in the usual locality at the Makaraka course were fortunate if they were able to drive away without delays. says the l’.B. Herald. In a number of instances cars were immovable owing to the greasy conditions. until the resident A.A. patrol, Mr J). C. Cummings, offered the towing service of his car, the tyres of which were fitted with chains. The service was keenly appreciated by many car-owners, and the incident yielded .a good anecdote which should find a place in the records of the Automobile Association. Having completed the series of towing jobs just after dusk, and having seen all the delayed cars on their respective homeward journeys, the patrol stripped the chains from.' the tyres of his own car and waded into a. roadside pool to clean them of the clinging mud. .An approaching vehicle slowed up, and the driver leaned out to make a searching survey of the scene. Before accelerating again, he inquired: AVhat’s wrong with you? Drunk?”
