COLONEL BELL’S Vi PAYS “1 have no comment to make other than that the question of a standing army has been considered, and i do know that those who have suggested it have no idea of what the cost would bo,” said Colonel P. H. Bell, officer commanding the southern command, when questioned regarding a standing army for New Zealand. “A regular force,” he said, “is regarded by many as a desirable form of defence. The whole thins has been „ thoroughly investigated more than once, but the cost is enormous. it means not only regular payment of troops, but the erection of barracks and other big expenditure.”
