SLAUGHTERHOUSE IN BOROUGH
REQUEST FOR LICENSE * A L’PI. I CATION It KF U S El > A letter from Messrs. Potts and Hodgson, on behalf of borough residents, was read at last night’s meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council. The letter protested against the suggested slaughterhouse in the borough, ft was particularly pointed out that the Waioeka river would lie contaminated for bathing purposes. An application was received from Mr Palmer for a slaughterhouse license in the borough. The clerk read a- petition signed by 84 ratepayers in tho borough, protesting against the granting of a slaughterhouse license in the borough. •Or Short said that in view of the large munher of objections and that applications might lie received lor other .slaughterhouse licenses in the borough, he would move that the application lie refused. Cr .Johnson said the council should secure further particulars before rescinding the previous motion. The clerk pointed out that the council had only received the application as prescribed by law. The application had not been granted. Cr Stevenson said the residential area, had been built long belorc the bacon factory had been built. The people would never have built il tin' factory had been there. The motion was seconded by Cr Day.
Cr Johnson pointed out that other towns had slaughterhouses in the middle of the towns and it made no difference. The matter rested with the health department. Cr Brown moved as an amendment that the matter he handed to the Hea Ith Department.
On being put to the meeting the amendment was lost only the mover and seconder voting in favour.
Cr Short’s motion was then put and carried.
