Ltd., the Opotiki Bacon Co., and mercantile agencies took place in ,tiie Borough Council Chambers on Wednesday night. Mr H. 0. Drake, president of the Carriers’ Association occupied, the chair and the meeting discussed charges, for the cartage of pigs and sheep. .

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency was represented by Mr G. "Wood, who said that his company was' interested in the charges for the cartage of. sheep from Matawai to Opotiki. The proposed charges over the 48 miles was 1/84. Mr Wood thought- this excessive and would probably result, in sheep being sent liom Matawai to Gisborne by rail. It was agreed to'yliscuss the matter at a conference between, the companies and -carriers concerned.

The; proposed charges for the cartage of Invcuii pigs up to ,30 miles were criticised by Mr W. Stevens who suggested that a special arrangement for cartage between Opotiki and J aneatua could be made between parties.

Air Drake in replying to a question, by Mr W . Jr-Connor commented on tlio fact that no suggestions concerning charges had been received from the I armors’ Union. Mr A\ .Hislop said that lie had been informed by the president of the Union that whatever prices were fixed a protest would be made in Wellington. Mr Drake said that the object of the meeting was to arrange satisfactory prices tor both parties to prevent under-cutting or over-charging.

An alteration in the proposed charges tor the cartage of store and porker pigs was suggested by Mr T. J. Palmer. Charges for the cartage of pigs were fixed at a rate satisfactory to all parties represented. it was agreed that the extra charge of 1/_ per pig where no leading race was provided was not- excessive.
