St. Stephen’s Social. A social will be held in the Parish Hail on Monday night.Catholic Social. A social will be held in the LyricHall on.’August 24, by St. Mary’s social committee. ■ , Telephone Line Down. A s . a result of. the big storm in* the Poverty Bay district on Wednesday night, a break occurred in the Opo-tiki-Gisborne telephone line. The break was between Motu and Toatoa where falling limbs and huge forest trees constitutes a regular hazard during the stormy season. Dispersal Sale. Attention is drawn to several alterations in the advertisement of Messrs Looney Bros.’ dispersal sale. The sale will be held, on W ednesday next, on the farm of Mr Beg. Looney and will comprise chiefly Jersey heifers, Jersey cows and horses. Boxing Entries. The following additional bouts have been arranged for the big boxing tournament to be held in the Regent Theatre on Wednesday next: Middleweight, Peter Jackson (Opotiki) v. F. Waller (Whakatane). Welterweight, Holloway (Opotiki) v. Perfect (Opotiki). Middleweight, N. Lysaght (Opotiki) v. C. Saves (Opotiki,). Dispersal Sale. Messrs Dalgety and Co. Ltd. will sell by auction at the Opotiki saleyards ,on Monday. 25th. July, three dairy herds on account of Messrs H. R. Watkins, A. J. Macrae, and F. Sargent. These farmers are giving up dairying and the quality of the stock is stated to he very good, showing gooid hutterfat backing. Short Notice Sale. A special sale of springing Jersey heifers on account of a Gisborne client will be held in the Opotiki saleyards hyi Messrs Dalgety and Company Limited, on Tuesday next, commencing at 12.30 p.m. The offering will comprise ICO choice high gride springing Jersey heifers, mostly due to calve at a very early date. Heavy Snowfall 1 . A heavv fall of snow covered the hills around Matawai yesterday morning and snow was also met with on part of the Opotiki-Gisborne highway between Matawai and Mr Trafford’s homestead. The snow-line was down almost to the Matawai Hotel. The wind blowing off the snow-covered ranges made conditions in Opotiki very cold throughout yesterday and although the sky was overcast most o£ last ni*;ht, frost was in evidence this morning.

Slips on OpotikiHGisborne Highway. Further slips have occurred on the Opotiki-Gisborne highway as a result of the wet- spell of "weather. Another slip came down at the point which gave trouble a few days ago near Mi Trafiord’s in the Waioeka gorge but this was cleared after daylight as it was considered too dangerous lor the men to work in the dark, with rubble still falling at intervals. A number of cars was also held up near Te Karaka where the bridge at McKay’s was again submerged. Mail services were not delayed to any great extent. A number of slips came down on the OtoUo hill but there was sufficient room for traffic to get past and men were put on toi clear the road. Srcw on Roads. .Motorists who were journeying to Opotikii during the storm this week, met snow on the highways.. Snow was passed through on the Ma : maku hills, the Taupe road and the Matawai route. An Opotiki motorist who travelled over the roads between Napier * and G isborne, states that the conditions, are still very had, the road in places being in am appalling condition. and in some' places in the Esk valley it was difficult to find where the road was. Largo numbers of sheep could he seen caught up in the fences along the hills. Many of the-hills* were completely stripped of grass.
