BOXING

TOURNAMENT ARRANGEMENTS RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED (By “Gentle Art”) A committee meeting of the Opotiki Boxing Association was held in Mr Tim Hickey’s premises on i'lidav last. Present Messrs T. G. Johnson (chairman), Tim Hickey (secretary), T v . N. Hill (treasurer), S. M. Jephson, O. Tabb, J. Mansell, AAlder, R. Black, B. Mulliern, Y.Muiliern, G. Lysaght, H. Parkinson, P. Chambers. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and inward correspondence “received” and outward correspondence approved. A very favourable reply was received from Mr A. G. Hultquist, M.P. re possibility of obtaining use of Drill Hall as a gymnasium. He stated that he had forwarded the Association’s letter on to the Minister of Defence with his favourable views on the subject. No reply has been received as yet-

Arrangements are well in hand for the forthcoming tourney at the Regent Theatre on July 20. The largest number of entries on record since t-lie inception of the association has been ceived by the secretary, Te. Puke 15, Whakatane 10, ToatOa and Waiawa 1 each, Gisborne 4 and Opotiki 15. It is most encouraging for the local association and boxing generally to find that such a number of young amateur boxers are keen to put on the gloves in the squared ring. Outside contestants are to be congratulated on offering to travel such long distances to take part in amateur tournaments. The local trainers Messrs B. and V. Mulliern have put the local boys through their paces at the band room, .and they should all give a good account- of themselves.

G. Lysaght is in great trim and is to star fight o rounds on the programme.

L. Dennett is also going great guns and is-to stage a four-rounder. Charlie (“Battling”) Snell is in solid training in the country under the capable guidance of Joe Quirk,, who reckons that road work is just the thing to make his “bomber” fighting fit.

A local novice' of only a month’s tuition is going to prove a real “dark horse”. Peter Jackson by name and Peter Jackson, by nature. He’s a rawboned. rakey, tough guy middleweight who will sure make his opponent go the whole way. All the other locals have been doing their stuff in a typical fighting manner and action promises fast and furious. With such large entries there will probably be some of tlioge “never to be forgotten” one-minute rounds contests and these should bring the house down. Officials fof Tourney. Box-office, Mr S. T.
