BORROWING PROPOSAL Sir. —Wiil you please allow me space to comment on a. letter which appeared in your previous issue. 1 think the council's object in placing the loan proposal before the ratepayers is to get their opinion as to whether £IU(X) should he* spent on the Duke Street stock route. To pay for the stock route out of rates as your correspondent suggests, would hardly he fair to ratepayers if the majority was not in favour of the scheme. I think that a good deal more important work, could be done for £IOOO including putting a permanent footpath in that portion of Wellington. Street where inconvenience is caused. Other footpaths could also be fixed up. The inference that somo of the councillors have not paid their rates is hardly a fair one and I don’t think it can be correct. The service they are rendering to the public is worth while, and I would like to express mv appreciation of their efforts. CITIZEN.
