ADDRESS BY CAPT. W. J. LYONS

LABOUR. PARTY INTERESTS There was . a large and enthusiastic attendance of ladies at the St. John’s Hall last night, to. hear an address by Capt. W. J. Lyon. M.P. for Waitemata. Mr A. G. Hultquist, district member, was also present. Miss N. Johnson acted as chairwoman and after introducing -Mr Lyon, called on Mr Hultquist to speak.

Mr Hultquist expressed his pleasure at having Mr Lyon consent to tour his electorate, and felt sure that his visit'here would malye an impression. M!r Lyon then spoke on matters of interest to the womenfolk, and outlined the.. national health - and superannuation scheme, explaining __ things very fully. He said that although there would be a tax of Is in tlie £, only 3d of that would go to the unemployment fund, 3d to superannuation and 6d for the health scheme. He went on to say that- people were saving there would be no> incentive to save but explained that a person could have a house to the value of £IOOO, and have £1750 in the bank —which would bring in an income of £52 a year —and still draw the superannuation. The health scheme would apply to everybody and all maternity expenses would be paid; £ls for eac-li child.

'At the conclusion of his address he thanked the ladies for their very attentive hearing and asked lor questions. A number were asked and answered to' the satisfaction of all. Mi Hultquist then brought up the mat®* ter of forming a women’s committee. This wag : discussed at length, but it was decided to . leave the matter to the local branch of the Labour Party to as there are a large number of lady members already in the branch and more applications from ladies to be dealt with at next meet- * mg.

Mrs J. -Shaw proposed a vote oi thanks to. 'Mr Lyon for Ins very interesting address. Mrs Ball seconded the motion, which was carried by acclamation. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
