“EARTHQUAKE" MYSTERY
STEPNEY HOUSES SHAKEN LONDON. April 14. People living in* the Stepney district of the East End of London were involved yesterday in what they came to term ‘‘the mystery of the missing earthquake.” Their houses were shaken as if by an earth tremor. And about that time—3 o’clock in the nioriniig—an earthquake occurred in Southern Europe.
But the distant earth shocks were not, according to the experts in seismograpli.yjfJrespousible lor the Stepney manifestations.
This puzzled the people of Stepney, who reported “rumblings,” which caused furniture to “slide” across the floors of their homes.
The earthquake in Southern Europe of considerable intensity, occurred about an hour later than the phenomena reported in"Stepney. It was recorded at a number of centres, but this shock, too. was not without its mystery, for the experts could not state precisely where the disturbance occurred.
