BAY TOURINC TEAM
BACKS CONSIDERED POOR
. The Bay of Plenty touring team which toured the South Island made a very favourable impression as far as the forwards were concerned but the backs failed to impress critics throughout the tour. In commenting on the match against Southland, the Southland Daily News states that the match was very disappointing, the Rnnfurlv Shield holders in particular giving a poor display, considering their reputation. The Southland hack's gave a very poor display and the Bay of Plenty backs were little better than the Southland rearguard. Individually they sometimes, showed flashes of ability, especially in the threoquarter line, but as a, unit they failed in the same manner as did their opponents. Their quick smothering may have spoilt to some extent the effectiveness of the Southland backs, but even when on attack they did not manage to impart any thrust into their movements. The Bay forwards played in comparison, a. fine, rugged game and often harried Southland with fast rushes and clever breaks hut they needed the help of their .backs when that assistance was not forthcoming. The pick of the visiting backs j the wingers E. Hohapata. and 1. jl.— the centre l Lees and W. Ivaipara- "fclio-half-back. The others suffered in much the same way as the Southland backs although additional extenuating circumstances —the wet conditions, to which they may possibly be unaccustomed —might be advanced in their • favour. J. Best, the All Black captain of the side, was an able leader in the forwards. He was well supported by E. Kerseberg. V. 31'oore and S. Douglas among others. The Bay forwards played a good game and showed themselves adepts in the art of loose rushes and dribbling.
