MOTOR NOTES

; .. "i • AMERICAN .USED CAR DRIVE '• - '•} '■ . •' f The recent used cjaif Campaign extending one week, put iMo effect by the American automobile y industry, with the object of relieving the stagnation caused by the huge stock/ of'used cars held by car dealers tlMWrffghout the U.S.A., was ihr more successful than was at. first expected. Throughout the country during that week £250,003 was spent in a special advertising campaign, drawing attention to the great value represented by many of the used cars held by dealers: The result, was the sale of more than 175',000 vehicles, representing a value of nearly £10.000,000.

A feature pleasing to dealers was the fact that almost 50 per cent, of the sales did not involve the trading-in of another vehicle, so that stocks were reduced by 50,000 ears, and put money into the hands of dealers with which to buy new . cars from the factories.

Undoubtedly this drive has had a good effect in relieving what had come to be a very serious position", though, even so, because of the business recession in the with Hits 10.500,000 unemployed, it is ndt expected that the production of new cars this year will exceed 2,500,000 units, as against the 3,442,118 units produced in 1937.
