■ -p-j > . • —r •vV«$ ENTIRE PLAN " v rf lW' ■ J3L00822 HACKS -WANTED .. ' % - t GISBORNE GROUP FORMED ; \l‘No matter how far mechanisation may go, in industry and in other ellrections, New Zealand can hardly do -without, a supply, of good-class saddle horses, it is the object of.tlie Racing 'Conference, supported by the Government, To encourage the breeding of horses for saddle uses, largely with the ultimate aim of having a sub- ' stantiql number available case of a national emergency,” stated MajorGeneral R. Young, in conversation with a pressman concerning liis visit io the E : ast| Coast. Major-General Young represents the New Zealand Racing Conference in the matter of establishing district groups in various portions of the Dominion' for the encouragement of horse-breeding. Pedigree stallions are to he used' in the scheme, and services to suitable mares are to be subsidised with the aid of the Government. By this plan, it is hoped to make the breeding of saddle-horses more attractive to farmers.

“The machinery of the scheme is simple enough,” Major-General Young explained. “There will be a selection of suitable stallions in the various districts, and service fees will be subsidised to a limit of £4 4s per mare. The plan is capable of expansion as occasion offers, and already two district committees have been' formed in this district, one for the area between Muriwai and Whangara, and inland as far as Muriwai, and the other for the; areri north of Whangara as far as Hick’s Bay.” Farmers of the district had taken up the scheme with much interest, lie was glad to note, and he anticipated that from the good class of mares ar vailable in Poverty Bay and on the East Coast, some excellent stock would be bred.
