LOSS OF H.B. PASTURE
LESS THAN 10 PER CENT. Original estimates of the area damaged by slips in the April flood's ill Hawke’s Bay greatly exceed the actual area damaged, according to Dr L. L. Grange, direcor of the soil sur- " vey. division of tl'e Department of Scientific and- Industrial Research/
The condition of the pasture land between the Esk and the- 'M’aikare Rivers suggested to observer/ earlier that 50 per cent, of the country was affected.
Air maps of the area have been examined by Dr Grange and lie feels certain that less than 10 per cent, of the pasture land has either slipped or been covered by slips. He thinks thatthe actual' area affected is probably »p! loss than 5 per cent, and stated that,ft ;: lie would not he surprised if detailed | measurements revealed that the tot- .jjj a I area affected was considerably less - . than even the latter figure.
