Shipping. i ■' ' The •motor-ship Waiotahi arrived: at Opotiki yesterday, and will leave for Auckland at 0 pan. to-morrmv. The Sunshine League. ' The annual meeting of the Opotiki Sunshine League will he held in St. John’s Hall on 'Monday next, 13th. June. .Afternoon tea'will be served at 3 pan. Citizens’ Bowling Club. The annual meeting of ,tho Opotiki Citizens’ Bowling Club will be held in the Masonic Hall on Friday, July 1. The meeting will be followed by a social at which the presentation of trophies will be made. Hunt Postponed!. The hunt, arranged for Saturday, June 11, at Ot-ara, has been cancelled. Instead of this hunt a meet has been arranged to be held at Paernta on Wednesday next, June 15. Coastal Bridge. It is reported that good progress is being made with the construction of the bridge spanning the Wljangaparoa River at Cape Runaway. One of the abutments has been completed and the. piles are being driven in the river. piers. Opotiki-Cisborne Road. The second of the two bridges under construction on the deviation of the main highway at Waikoliu is now almost, completed and if weather conditions are suitable, it is expected that an early commencement will be made on the formation of the detour road. The new deviation should be completed before the end of the year.

Prince of Wales Cup Match. Advice lias been received by the Wairoa Rugby Union, that the Prince of Wales Cup Rugby, match, which was to be have been played at Opotiki, must be played on Saturday, June 18, at Wairoa. in conjunction with the opening of the Sir James Carroll Memorial Hall. The Esk Railway. The new railway line through the Esk Valley was laid up to tiie Eskdale station, and the crane which has been used in laying the rails, immediately began the task of "(lifting from the damaged; line to the new one 19 sheep and cattle trucks which were overwhelmed by the flood waters and lav embedded in silt.

Bring end Buy Sale. r l’he Bring and Buy Sale which was held 1 recently in St. John’s Hall in connection with the P.AA.M.L., was an outstanding success, a feature of the afternoon being the wonderful hand-work' produced by local people. The exhibits included needlework, photography, woodwork, tapestry, and a .model aeroplane. There was a large attendance and as a result of a very pleasant afternoon the mission funds were greatly increased.

Friendly Political Opponents. Although they were political opponents, .Mr \Y. Sullivan. National Party candidate for the Bay of Plenty, and Mr '.A. G. .1:1 ultcjuist, member for the district, are the best of friends, according to a statement made by 31 r Hultcjiiist at a meeting addressed by the Hon. P. Fraser. Minister of Health and Education, in To Araroa on Tuesday evening. “I have congratulated 31 r Sullivan on his work as Mayor of Whakatane.” Mr Hult(|iiist said, “and .1 also told him that he would make a good: member of Parliament, but not nearly a» good as 1 would.” (Laughter.) Air Hultqiiist added that when he was elected he had promised .to give full-time service in the interests of the electors, au.l since then he had worked 10 or 17 hours a day in,their interests.

A Treat in Store.

The Opotiki District High _ School production ‘ ‘Princess Chrysanthemum”, which will be presented tonight in tne Regent Theatre should be a great success. Those who were privileged to see the rehearsal yesterday afternoon are loud in their praise of the performance and express the' highest praise of the very fine work performed by those responsible for the training of the children and others who helped in various ways in,the preparation Avofk. Tile production should be one of; the best, if not the best, performances by children, ever seen in Opotiki, and patrons will be more than surprised at the beautiful scenes and acting of the children.

Hastings and Half-Halfday.

At a meeting of Hastings retailers, various speakers pointed out that with the change of the half-holiday- from Thursday to Saturday, the suburban shops, which were in the habit of selling groceries, tobacco and other goods “any time, any day,” would greatly increase their out-of-hours business to the detriment of the retailers who were compelled to observe- tlio regulation shopping hours. One or two such shops would not make any difference, it was stated, but 4U or 50 made the matter serious. It was unanimously decided to make representations 1 to the proper authorities to. tighten up the law regarding afterhour trading in Hastings.

Experimental Maize Crops.

Splendid results have been secured from the experimental maize plots at Buslimere (Gisborne), undertaken by the Government. Twelve different varieties of maize were grown, the length of the rows being LJ- chains, with duplicate rows grown further over. There is a big difference in the yield and the trial appears to have been well worth while. The heaviest yield per two .rows is 15G1 bs., and the lowest is 68 lbs., with the average rows about SO lbs. The most interesting part is that each two rows that are duplicate eel are within a pound or two in weight of the trial rows.

Maori King's Visit.

Might motor-buses carrying natives from the Waikato arrived in Opotiki yesterday morning. After luncheon the party proceeded to Gisborne, on route to Wairoa for the Carroll Memorial Hui, at which King Koroki, who was a member of the'.party, will he present. A number of Maoris from Opotiki and surrounding districts will also make the journey.
