IMMEDIATE SURVEY HIGHWAY ALTERATIONS .In a letter to Mr A- G. Hultquist, M.P., the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, states : As you are aware, Cabinet lias instructed that surveys are to he put in hand at once in connection with the proposed railway extension to Opotiki, and I am pleased to be able to inform you that arrangements are being made for the immediate setting up of the necessary survey parties. Associated with the railway survey itself, surveys m connection with possible alterations to the State highway system between the Rangitaiki Plains and Opotiki are involved, and these two surveys must run together as the final locations for the State highway system and the railway system are in a considerable measure dependent one upon Dhe other. The transfer of two experienced officers to take charge of this survey work is being arranged and it is anticipated that these officers will be on the ground within a period of about two weeks. You can rest assured that the survey work will proceed witli all expedition possible. Prime Minister’s Telegram. In a telegram to Mr Hultquist the Prime Minister, Hon. M. J. Savage, states: Replying your telegram I can assure you we are not making survey only for our health’s sake. Tile survey is being made with the object of completing the line at the earliestpossible date.
