SCHOOL SWIMMING CERTIFICATES
PRESENTED BY HON. >P. ERASER The presentation of the school swimming and life-saving certificates took place at the Opotiki District High School this morning when tiie Hon. P. Fraser, Minister of Education, Mr A. 0. Hultquist, member for the Bay of Plenty • Mr Mackey, representative of the eastern ward on the Education Board, and members of the school committee were present. Mr A. E. Payne, chairman of the school committee, welcomed the visitors, calling on Mr Hultquist to .speak. Mr. Hultquist briefly addressed the gathering and then asked Mr Mackey to speak. Mr Mackey, after addressing the » children called on Mr Fraser to present the certi:icates to the successful pupils. Special mention was made by Mr Fraser of the distances swam, which, he stated, must be a record for New Zealand. He was especially pleased with the achievement of Master Geoffrey Potts. The school was then inspected and the Minister noted the alterations which were necessary and promised to arrange for the board’s architect to go into the matter of re-modelling the primary department and also to get out plans for a new High School, the grounds' of which lie also inspected. After congratulating the children' on their swimming abilities, the teaching staff for its good work and thanking the school committee for their work in bringing urgent and necessary matters before him, the party moved off to inspect the Omarumutu School. -
