FIRST MEETING OF SESSION A JOLLY EVENING The’ first- meeting of tlie >1933 session of the Opotiki Orphans’ Club was held in the Masonic Hall last night. In spite of the stormy weather there was an attendance of over 40 members. A considerable increase in membership has taken place recently, the total number of members- having reached 97. . The membership limit is 100.
Bro. At G. Stevenson presided over the meeting which was a particularly jolly- one. The toast to the King was followed by selections by the orchestra under Bro. McDougall. Community singing was led by Bro. Stevenson, the first song, “It ain’t agoin’ to rain no more” being particularly appropriate. The toast to New Members was proposed by Bro. A. Debrecenv, and responded to by Bro. H. G. Lovett, formerly of the Takapuna Orphans’ Club. Songs by Bro. G. E. Watson and also by Bro. .El. Reece were greatly appreciated. Bro. Dawson proposed the toast to the president, in which lie .expressed best wishes for a 'Successful season. Bro--. Stevenson responded. A recitation by Bro. A. Debrecenv was followed by a song by Bro. Stevenson. A further recitation by Bro. C. E. Shaw was followed by a savoury supper served bv the chief steward, Bro. Dodgson and his able assistants. Orchestral selections followed. Bro. Simpson then led community singing. Recitations and,topical verses were given by Bros. T. O’Sullivan and -McDougall. The evening was concluded with the singing- of the National Anthem.
