THE ANNUAL MEETING

SMALL FIRE LOSS The annual meeting of the Opotiki Fire Boards ivas held last week at the fire station. Present: 'Messrs' M. Gumming (Auckland), R. A: Wilson (Auckland),. F. Short, G. f &. Moody, J. W. C. H. Fleming J. Shaw ’(brigade superintendent), wars also in (attendance.! Owing; to tl# retirement of the chairman (Mr H. Clay), the secretary took the chair until a new chairman was elected. Chairman Elected: On the motion of Mr .Gumming, seconded by Mr Moody, Mr Sliort was elected chairmau? for the ensuing year. Mr Cuinmjng • pointed out that Mr Short had been deputy-chairman since the inception of the board and had done yeoman service. j. The secretary stated that, owing to the retirement of the former cliair- . many no report had been prepared. The Bloard agreed to a. report being drawn up by the chairman and the secretary" on the same lines as the previous report* Superintendent’s Report. The superintendent’s report for the year was read by the chairman and “received.” . The report stated that the brigade had answered eleven calls and one false alarm. Seven of the calls were received by the other four by street alarm boxes. There had been 67 musters/ including five calls, and the average attendance had been twelve members. A new fire engine had been acquired and had given satisfaction. 'All of-the accommodation and business premises had been inspected, and they complied fairly well with the. regulations. Several recommendations were made in the report, the most important being that the siren tower lie shifted and a shed erected for storing surplus gear and provisions. With slight variations these recommendations were adopted by the Board. Estimates : The board considered the estimates for the current year, and made provision for the cost of carrying the superintendent’s recommendations into effect. The total amount"'ot the estimates was £530. Quarterly Meeting: Following the annual meeting, the board’s quarterly
