, fj, t ■ . THE OPOIIKI RUGBY UNION the: annual, meeting The animal meeting of the Opotiki Rugby Union was held in, the Mission Hall on Friday night. The president, Mr G. jS. Moody, occupied the chair. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read by the secretary, Mr Hughes, and confirmed. The report and balance-sheet were then presented and adopted. The balancesheet showed that the Union commenced the season with a credit balance of £4-> and, completed the season with approximately the same money in hand. After a brief discussion the report and balance-sheet were adopted. On the motion of Mr. E. Seville, a vote of thanks to Sir. G. S. .Moody for presenting a set of jerseys to the Union, was carried by acclamation. Mr. W. T. Burrett complimented the management committee for their work during the year, and said they had done very well to finish the season with the finances showing about the same credit balance as the previous year. Election of Officers. The election of officers’ resulted as follows: Patron, Mr J. H. Reid. President, Mr G. S. Moody. Vice-presidents, the presidents of each affiliated club, Hon. Surgeons, Dr. A. J. Brass and Dr. H. Mail. Hon. Auditor, Mr C. H. Fleming. Secretary-treasurer; left to the management committee. Club Delegates: Messrs T. Hickey, G. Wood (City); Ml. Delamere, B. Black (Te Huia); T. Black, J. Edward? (0.M.P.). Referees’ Assn. Delegate, Mr A. Short. Delegates to Bay of Plenty Union, Messrs G. B. Guthrie and W. T. Burrett. General. A request was received for affiliation by the P.W.D. Club. Mr Guthrie moved and Air Hickey seconded, that all clubs send in, a list of senior players. —Carried. Mr Short moved that it be a. recommendation to the management committee ■ that the Waioeka juniors
be accepted, for affiliation. There was no seconder. MV. Sheeran was assured that' the Waioeka. team would be able to play under one of the affiliated clubs.
On the motion of Mir Burrett it was decided that a meeting of delegates be held on Tuesday* On the motion of Mr. Burrett, seconded by Mr A. Short, it was decided to elect Dr H. M. Budd as a life member of the Union in recognition of the splendid work which he did on behalf of the Union over a lengthy period.
Selectors.—On the motion of Mr McCullough, seconded by Mr M. Patterson, it was decided that a sole senior selector be appointed, the appointment- to be made by the management committee. ,
The following .were nominated for the positon of sole selector : Messrs W. T. Burrett, M. Patterson, C. Newth, Sheeran, L. Davies.
Ml- Seville rferred to the necessity of encouraging third grade football in the district and suggested’ the management committee discuss r he question. He suggested that weight and age- limits be instituted. Mr. A .Short referred to the shortage of referees in the district* and urged clubs to endeavour, to assist in increasing the number.
On the motion of Mr Burrett, seconded by Mr Guthrie, it was decided to commence the competitions, on the first Saturday! in May. Mr Seville referred to the sum oi £2oo which had been received from the New Zealand Kugby Union by the Bay of Plenty Union and expressed fears that this money might be utilised to send a Bay representative team on a trip t® the South Island. He considered the money could he better spent among the unions in the Pay of Plenty and considered that a tour this year would do little -to help football in the Bay. He felt that the -money could be spent to greater advantage. He thought a tour would be ; all right but would be better confined to the North Island. Mr Biifrett said it was not intended that any of the money mentioned should he* used to finance a tour. The money would lie used to foster Bay football.
Mr Davies said other Unions had found that tours were not self-sup-porting ahd the money had to be found by I;the Unions concerned. Ho urged that big matches should be played in the Bay. >j Junior Selectors. —On the motion of Mr Seville it was decided that there be three junior selectors.
Mr Guthrie thanked supporters for their assistance to the management committee. and, said he had unable to offer his ..services onithe eom- -* - . :«■■■ ; . k • - mittee again. -> '• ,
Mr Hickey expressed (regret that Mr, Guthrie had . been unable'-to offer his services as a delegate. and moved that a vote of appreciation of his services be placed on record. A vote of thanks s to, the chair concluded" the meeting^
