MAORI YOUTH CHARCED TH EFT OF FIREWOOD A Maori, Muni Koroua. Tai, aged 22, was charged before Messrs F. J. Short- and C. Pipe J.P.’s at the Opotiki Police Court yesterday with the theft of a quantity of firewood, valued at 30s, the property’ of Mr William Gurney, of Waioeka. The accused was also charged with wilfully destroying a padlock and chain. The accused pleaded guilty.
Constable W. H. Rogers, who prosecuted. stated that on 18th. April, Mr Gurney, a farmer of Waioeka, who Jias a small area of land near the Waioeka Pa. containing a quantity of hush, found the gate open, and the chain and lock damaged. He noticed wheel marks of a dray leading from the section to accused’s home. The accused was examined by Constable Cooper and admitted the offence, although he had previously been warned not- to touch the firewood. In warning the accused not t<> repeat tin l offence the Bench inflicted a fine of £3 on the first charge and ordered him to make restitution to the value of the firewood. On the second charge the accused was convicted and ordered to pay 4s restitution, the value of the chain. ,
