BULLET OF HEALTH

HEAVY NITROGEN Professor Harold Urey, awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of heavy hydrogen and heavy water, has just isolated another new substance, heavy nitrogen. Heavy differs from ordinary nitrogen in having one more unit of atomic weight—ls times that of hydrogen instead of 14. J.ti js easily detectable even in the minutest quantities, and biologists hope to use it as a sort of “tracer bullet” in the digestive system. By introducing heavy nitrogen into chemical reactions it can he rraced right through, its career, and much valuable information learned about the behaviour of nitrogefi as it travels from one part of the body to another. Heavy nitrogen is being produced at Professor Urey’s laboratory at the rate of a third of a pint a day. Its estimated value is £129.060 a pound.
