Bank Holiday. St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated tomorrow. The usual holiday will be observed by the Opotiki banks. Labour Meeting. ✓ A general meeting of the Opotiki Labour Party will be held in the Halid Room to-morrow night. Accident Patients. Inquiries made this afternoon concerning Mr. T. Braae reveal a slight improvement. Master Dick Talbot is 'also reported to be progressing favourably. Athletics. The Opotiki Athletic Club has postponed the final big day meeting, which will now he held on April 2. it lias been decided to hold another night meeting, and this will take place on Friday next. Obituary. The death took place at the Opotiki Hospital of Mr. H. R. Kelly, who was employed on public works at r l orere The funeral which was conducted by Rev. A. C. Hampton, took 'place yesterday at the Opotiki cemetery and was largely attended by fellow workers of deceased from Tcrere. Hawthorn Berries. 'The hawthorn hedges in the Opotiki district at the present time are bearing a most prolific crop of berries. With their heavy crop of red berries, the hedges pesent an attractive appearance. It is many years since the hedges have fruited so well. Cattle Tick. Speaking t u a “News’’ representative. an Opotiki farmer expressed the opinion that the cattle tick pest was not so bad this season as previous years. There were very few ticks in evidence on his herd this season, although conditions appeared to Ik- iavoiiruble lor the ticks. Camping Ground. The number using the Opotiki camping ground has dwindled considerably during the past week, although it is usual for a few cars to use the ground for camping overnight. The camp bus "'been used fairly consistently during the past three months and at times was well filled. Trailers have been very much in evidence this year, showing the increasing popularity of attachment. Harvest Stall. A pleasant and profitable afternoon was spent in St. John’s Hall on Monday when a “.firing and Buy’’ Harvest Stall was held. The stalls were well stocked with produce which had been contributed during the week-end. A cake stall was also -popular. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the ladies. Hole Blown in Garage. During the work of blowing to pieces the machinery at the old power house, a hole was blown in the back wall of Air. C. Pipe’s garage. Although debris was blown to the opposite, end of the garage, no damage was done to the car in the shed. Clay used for blanketing the effects of the explosions was also blown through the window and liberally sprinkled the windscreen and bonnet of the ear. Some of the nearby houses also received showers <T clay during the breakingup operations. Ihe old engine at the site of tin* Opotiki Joinery Works was also broken up, for use as scrap iron. Another Footpath Fire. Tim sodium chlorate which was sprinkled along the walls of the buildings in Kelly Street west a few days ago. was responsible for another outbreak of fire late on Wednesday afternoon. Apart from a light sprinkling with water by borough employees no real attempt has been made to get rid of tlie fire danger.
