DAMAGE TO GISBORNE PASTURES

HUNDREDS OF ACRES LOST COVERED WITH DEEP SILT All idea of the heavy damage suffered hv landowners near the mouth of the Waipaua river, Gisborne, by the recent floods, is given by Mr. F. W. Peddle, a landowner whose property lies near the mouth of the river and is subject to frequent, flooding. “There are 1400 to 1500 acres of land on both sides of the Waipaoa river mouth that will have to be resown with grass as a result of the flooding, and I estimate the loss to farmers in that vicinity conservatively at £4 an acre,” said. 3ltr. Peddle. Ala 1 . Peddle said that lie had made a tour of the flooded area on both sides of the river mouth. The area. mentioned l as having to bo resown was not the total area, that had been covered b.y silt, but merely that which had been deeply coated. On his property alone 250 acres out of 300 acres would have to be resown. Some of the smaller .farmers at the mouth of the> river had lost everything and were destitute, lie said.
