AT WAIOTAiHI BEACH . -A- v v-■ y ' • ' SPECATCULAII MARCH PAST \ Over one hundred cars'-lined the roadside at the, Waiotahi Beach near the Opotiki Life-Saving Club’s sheds yesterday. In spite of the coolness of the weather the large crowd of interested spectators continued to watch the display until late in the. afternoon. , It is some years since such a large gathering of surf teams has been seen in Opotiki and the Opotiki Surf Club is to be complimented .upon its enterprise. Credit is also due, to the Indies who organised the very successful dance. 1 • / Surf Medallions. —During the morning 12 candidates' from the Waikanae (Gisborne) Surf Club were' examined for surfi medallions by Mr. Seville and Mr de Costa (Gisborne). The tests were carried out, under.very cold conditions btit the sea was not very rough. To ensure the candidates! were capable, the examiners demanded a long swim of approximately 350 yds. Much care is taken- to make sure that medallion holders are efficient and the tesj-s occupy about tw o hours. Candidates have two swims of approximately 350 yds. and have to occupy all positions in a- team. The successful candidates were: Wauchop, Lange, Smith, Wood, sen. Caulihvell, Scott, Taylor, Wall, Morse, McClutehie, and Miss McKnight. Land Drill. —The first event on the programme was a demonstration of land drill and resuscitation by the,- Opotiki ladies’ team, which consisted of Misses P. Mansell, K. Jcphson, K. Muiiiern, 1. Wilson, L. Caves, and I\l. Day. The precision of the movements performed was excellent. March Past. —This was a very spectacular event, the marching of all teams being excellent. It would be very difficult to pick out the best team. Seven teams participated, as follows:—Waikanae (Gisborne) men’s team, Waikanae ladies’ team. Wainui (Gisborne) men’s team, Wliakatane iiin’.s team, Opotiki men’s team, Opotiki ladies’ team, and Opotiki District 'High School boys’ team. The Opotiki men’s team consisted of Messrs H. G. Simpson, B. Anderson, C-., Sav. C. Howlett. It. Lynch,-and R. MlKenzie. 6-man Rescue and Resuscitation by Waikanae A, Wainui and Wliakatane. It was noticeable that the Whakatane team was using .Australian methods and these appeared less tiring fo tin 1 survmen. were neater and 1 just as efficient as**the N.Z. methods adopted by the other teams. The Wliakatane team is fortunate in having as ccnch, Mr Wederill, who has just returned from Australia where he has been studying Australian methods. 6-man Rescue and Resuscitation by Opotiki and Waikanae B. Both teams put up a very good porformmu-e. G-man Rescue and Resuscitation by Opotiki Ladies. Waikanae ladies, and Opotiki D.H.S. The ladies put up a very' good performance, and both teams should endeavour to attend the Auckland provincial championships next year, where they would undoubtedly meet with some success. The 0.1).H.5. team is to be complimented on its first showing in open competition work. The boys’ drill was very well done, and men’s teams will have to look to their laurels in the future. 4-man Alarm Event by Wainui, Waikanae. Opotiki.
